Editions in Work Records

Edition statement and encoding description

These elements should be provided in the header for texts that we provide an edition for. The <editionStmt> should specify the origin of the text. The <encodingDesc> specifies the principles used when encoding, when known (e.g. transcription, specific tag sets, etc.)

<editionStmt>
          <p>Digital text based on  <bibl><ptr target="bm:Marrassini1993AmdaSeyon"></ptr></bibl>.</p>
</editionStmt>

            <correction>
               <p>The following errors

Example 2

divs edition and textparts

Text is entered in the <body> of a TEI file under into a <div type='edition'> . Each text part should be contained into a <div>. <div>s should always be well nested one into the other. These will always take a <subtype='textpart'> and a @subtype with the desired value. There should always be also a @n identifying, for example, chapter 3 as well as a @corresp pointing to the appropriate <msPart> or <msItem>

<div type="edition">
<div type="textpart" subtype="chapter" n="1">
<ab>
<l n="1">
</l>
<l n="2">ሮቤል ፡ ወስምዖን ፡ ወሌዊ ፡ ወይሁዳ ።</l>
<l n="3">ወይ[ሳኮ]ር ፡ ወዛቡሎን ፡ ወብንያም ።</l>
</ab>
  </div>
</div>

Example 3

Please be careful in always stating the sources for the description of a work, especially for the division of the work into textparts and other structural decisions. Ideally this source should be an edition, but if none exists, state if the description follows, for example, the EAe or a manuscript.

<div type="edition">
 <note>This division into textparts follows <ref type="mss" corresp="FSUrueppII2"></ref>.</note>
<div type="textpart" subtype="book" n="1" xml:id="Kefl1" xml:lang="gez"></div></div>

Example 4

Note that after each Gǝʿz word there should be a separator or punctuation without space.

If the text contains verses we will use <l> as in the example above. <lb> can also be used to mark linebreaks, for example, in Inscriptions. Be careful: <ab> should be only used in the lowest level div nesting:

               <div n="2" xml:id="ed1ch2" type="textpart" subtype="chapter">
                  <label>On the lizard</label>
                  <div n="1" xml:id="ed1ch2se1" type="textpart" subtype="sentence">
                     <ab> ፪ ፍካሬ፡ በእንተ፡ ሕንጲን፡ እንተ፡ ተፃሐየየት። </ab>
                  </div>
                  <div n="2" xml:id="ed1ch2se2" type="textpart" subtype="sentence">
                     <ab> ሕንጲን፡ ሶበ፡ ትረሥእ፡ ይጼለላ፡ አዕይንቲሃ፡ ወተዐውር፡ እስከ፡ ኢትሬኢ፡ ብርሃነ፡ ፀሓይ። ወተኀሥሥ፡ አረፍተ፡ ዘይኔጽር፡
                        መንገለ፡ ጽባሕ፡ ወታሰምክ፡ ህየ። ወሶበ፡ ይመውቅ፡ ፀሓይ፡ ይትፈታሕ፡ አዕይንቲሃ፡ ወትከውን፡ ሕያውተ። ዘንተ፡ እንከ፡ ትገብር፡
                        በዘባቲ፡ ሠናይ፡ ፍጥረት። አንተሂ፡ ኦብእሲ፡ እንዘ፡ ብከ፡ ብሉይ፡ ክዳን፡ ሶበ፡ ተጸለለ፡ ዓይነ፡ ልብከ፡ ኅሥሥ፡ ዓረፍተ፡ ርድኤት፡
                        በተጋህ፡ እስከ፡ ይሠርቅ፡ ለከ፡ ፀሓየ፡ ምሕረቱ፡ ለእግዚእነ፡ ዘሰመዮ፡ ነቢይ፡ጽባሐ። ወይበርህ፡ ዐይነ፡ ልብከ፡ በዝንቱ፡ አርአያ።
                     </ab>
                  </div>
               </div>

Example 5

To identify a <div> you can use a <label>

<div type="textpart" xml:id="Athanasius1">
            <label>Homily on the Incarnation by Athanasius of Alexandria</label>
         </div>

Example 6

or a @corresp pointing to another work, like in the following example from

              <div type="edition">
              <div type="textpart" xml:lang="gez" xml:id="Genealogy" corresp="LIT3854KingList">
              <label>King List</label>
              </div>
              <div type="textpart" xml:lang="gez" xml:id="Gadl">
              <label>Gadl of Takla Hāymānot</label>
              </div>
              <div type="textpart" xml:lang="gez" xml:id="Miracles" corresp="LIT3971Taamme">
              <label>Miracles of Takla Hāymānot</label>
              </div>
              </div>

Example 7

When assigning @xml:ids to a <div>, please avoid to use values which are keywords. The above Miracles or miracle1 are fine, but e.g. miracle is a value in the taxonomy, so, it will conflict in the application with that identifier.

You may wish to group <l> elements in a <lg>, which is also a structural element, which @n, @type and @xml:id as in this example from Lǝssāna sabʾ.

               <lg n="1" type="stanza" xml:id="s1">
                  <l n="1">ናሁ፡ ተማኅፀንኩ፡ በኆኅያተ፡ ስምከ፡ ካፍ።</l>
                  <l n="2">ወበቀዳማይ፡ የውጣ፡ ዘጥንተ፡ ፊደሉ፡ አሌፍ።</l>
                  <l n="3">ከመ፡ ታድኅነኒ፡ ክርስቶስ፡ እምትንሣኤ፡ ልሳን፡ ወአፍ።</l>
                  <l n="4">እስመ፡ ልሳን፡ ቀተሎሙ፡ ለማኅበረ፡ ሰማዕት፡ አእላፍ።</l>
                  <l n="5">በነገሩ፡ ውዴት፡ ጽኑዕ፡ ዘይበልሕ፡ እምሰይፍ።</l>
               </lg>

Example 8

This is optional, you do not have to so for all stanzas or other groups of verses.
