History

<history>↗ can contain the elements <origin>↗, <acquisition>↗ and <provenance>↗, in which the history of the manuscript can be described in as much detail as known and desired. Please consider the TEI definitions of these elements when deciding where to encode the information known to you:

1. <origin>↗ contains any descriptive or other information concerning the origin of a manuscript, manuscript part, or another object. See also origin.
2. <acquisition>↗ contains any descriptive or other information concerning the process by which a manuscript or manuscript part or another object entered the holding institution.
3. <provenance>↗ contains any descriptive or other information concerning a single identifiable episode during the history of a manuscript, manuscript part, or another object after its creation but before its acquisition.

Note that therefore in the following example from BLorient581, Madḫāne ʿĀlam is not encoded as the original place of the manuscript, since it is not known where it was produced. The looting from this church constitutes an event of its history and is encoded in <provenance>↗:
