General description
Saʿātāt za-gǝbṣ is a version of the Maṣḥafa saʿātāt, a Church service made up of psalms, biblical readings and hymns. It is taken from the Copto-Arabic tradition. The date of the translation into Gǝʿǝz is unknown, according to the teachers of the Qǝddāse bet, it was spread in the 13th century by Takla Hāymānot↗ and his monastic network.
The three other types of Maṣḥafa saʿātāt identified by Taft 1986 are:
Maṣḥafa saʿātāt: the Saʿātāt of Giyorgis of Saglā↗ , which replaced the Saʿātāt za-gǝbṣ element TEI with id LIT2230Saatat: and is presently in use in Ethiopia and Eritrea;
Maṣḥafa saʿātāt: a Saʿātāt that includes the entire Psalter in the daily pensum;
Gize ṣalot: a cursus of prayers which is not really a Saʿātāt, but a Gize ṣalot for hermits and recluses.
