State of preservation
good
Condition
The threads of the sewing are broken, the original sewing is missing. Recently, a traditional craftsman tried to repair the volume; he applied parchment guards to the spine folds of the quires but attached them so tightly that now the structure of the quires cannot be discerned. The original order of the folia is heavily disturbed. Many leaves and quires are misplaced (perhaps as the result of the aforementioned recent intervention) and to reconstruct the original sequence for many texts is hardly possible. The only surviving leaf of an ancient Four Gospel book (Unit 1) could have been introduced into the volume also at that time.
Binding
Two wooden boards. Two pairs of sewing stations. Most of the quires are reinforced by parchment guards.
Binding material
wood
Original binding
No

Origin of codicological unit 2
1382—1412 According to Addition 5, the manuscript (Unit 2) was donated to Dabra Māʿṣo↗ by the local dignitary Tasabka Madḫǝn most probably soon after it was produced upon the commission of the same person (together with one more manuscript that is not available today?), in the time of King Dāwit II (r. ca. 1382—1412). Some time in the 17th century, the monk Zabāna Krǝstos had access to the manuscript.

check the viewerFols 2ra–145vb A collection of homilies (Dǝrsānāt) (CAe 5856) The collection of homilies contained in the manuscript is similar in composition to those in Mss. London, British Library, BL Oriental 774; Samen Gondar, Dāgā ʾƎsṭifānos, Ṭānāsee 131; Berlin, Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Orient. 3075 (see Hammerschmidt and Six 1983). However, the sequence of the homilies is different mainly due to the condition of the manuscript (see below).

The text of the note is printed also in Nosnitsin and Bulakh 2014, and an English translation in Ancel 2016. The note presents ʿaqqābe saʿāt Tasabka Madḫǝn donor (of Dabra Māʿṣo Yoḥannǝs↗ ?) as the donor of the manuscript (here called ʾAfawarq) and of another book referred to as Ṗāwlos, which might have been a manuscript of Pauline Epistles (now not in the collection of Dabra Māʿṣo↗ ). Further the note mentions the unnamed wife of Tasabka Madḫǝn and his father Hallo ʾƎgziʾabǝḥer with his wife baʿāltet ʾAsmǝʿu (possibly not the mother of Tasabka Madḫǝn ). Also mentioned are the ruling king Dāwit II (r. ca. 1382—1412) and other notables of the time such as makʷannǝn (of Tǝgrāy↗ ?) ʾAron and māʾkala baḥr Za-ʾAmmānuʾel . Not the entire note is absolutely understandable. One wonders whether the words about the borrowing of vestements from the church of Dabra Māʿṣo↗ (ሶበ፡ ተለቀሕኩ፡ ግምዛሁ፡ ለዮሓንስ፡) should be understood literally. The mode of reference to Tasabka Madḫǝn changes from the 1st (“I borrowed”) to the 3rd person sing. (“his father is Hallo ʾƎgziʾabǝḥer”). There are some mistaken forms such as ጳውስ for ጳውሎስ, ማዐጣንት for ማዕጠንት, ነሥየ for ነሥእየ, እዘ for እንዘ; cp. also ማእከል፡ በሕር for the standard ማእከለ፡ በሕር. The word fālot might be a plural form for fālo (“wallet, purse, basket”, see Leslau 1987). The word wasutāy does not appear in dictionaries but it may denote “chalice” (probably derived from the root s-t-y “to drink”, originally built with prefix ma- or mǝ-, cp. maste, Leslau 1987). In the penultimate line, ዘሐከከ (!) sic by Denis Nosnitsin, literally meaning “he who troubled”, must be a mistake for ዘፈሐቀ “he who erased” (see Leslau 1987), the standard word in the condemning formula. Cp. also the very early attestation of the word gǝmzā, known mostly from Amharic (the standard contemporary form is gǝmǧā, Kane 1990).

Palaeography of codicological unit 2
Hand 2
of codicological unit 2Script: Ethiopic
Late fourteenth-/first half of the fifteenth-century “square” script.
Ink: Black; red.
Rubrication: Incipits of the homilies (a few lines until Text I-4, and occasionally thereafter, e.g., Text I-22; otherwise mostly three rubricated lines alterating with black lines); notes in the upper margin of the folia indicating occasions for the reading; elements of the punctuation signs throughout until Text I-4, and with interruptions thereafter; elements of the text dividers thereafter throughout the Ms.
Careful and regular; by a well-trained scribe. Broad script. Downstrokes are right-sloping, tops are very slightly inclined to the left or horizontal (cp. the letters ወ, መ, ሠ). Mostly rounded letter shapes. The numerals are written without dashes above and below, see, e.g., check the viewerfols. 22ra, , check the viewer44ra, , check the viewer100vb, , check the viewer111ra, , check the viewer138ra . The numeral ፮ has the loop open, looking like compressed ፯ (see, e.g., check the viewer22ra , in the upper margin). The same scribe probably wrote Mss. MY-001 and MY-008 (see the descriptions above and below, and Appendix II).Check for additional bibliography
