General description
The text of a Commentary on the Nicene Creed appears at the end of a copy of the Psalter and Weddase Maryam belonging to the Ethiopian church at Dabra Gannat in Jerusalem [MS JE 48 E = MS Dabra Gannat 186].
The text of the commentary and the preamble is in the type of archaic or pre-modern Amharic that is generally called Old Amharic.
The text opens with an extensive preamble, running to over 800 words, in which are described Arius heresy and the background to the Council of Nicaea and its Creed, the purpose of which was to put an end once and for all to the Arian heresy. Following the preamble, the text of the Creed itself is analysed phrase by phrase in the Geez version with Amharic translation and commentary.
