General description
This record is the general record for the Maṣḥafa qandil, in cases where its recension is not known. The Maṣḥafa qandil is the ritual for the Unction of the Sick in the Ethiopian Church. Each of its seven sections consists of the following elements: the lighting of a wick, a supplication, an epistle, the Trisagion, the Prayer of the Gospel with incensing and a mǝsbāk, a Gospel reading and a prayer. Two recensions, which correspond to the same Arabic Vorlage, but are different translations have been identified by ‘Qändil: Mäṣḥafä qändil’, EAe, IV (2010), 259b–260b (U. Zanetti) on the basis of printed editions. Maṣḥafa qandil corresponds to Chaîne 1913c and the church editions, e.g. Tasfā Gabra Śǝllāse 1993 and Tasfā Gabra Śǝllāse n.d.b. Maṣḥafa qandil corresponds to the edition Anon. 1973a.
