Origin

Second half of the sixteenth-/first half of the seventeenth-century.^{notBefore: 1550
notAfter: 1649} Unit 1 was commissioned for the church Dabra Maʿḍo Yohannǝs↗ by Gabra Krǝstos (cp. check the viewerFols. 32ra, 33vb ), a son of the priest Sǝmʿon from Dabra Maʿḍo (see Colophon 1 of codicological unit 1 , item 1.2 and Colophon 2 of codicological unit 2 , item 2 ), and written by two scribes, one of them being Fǝqura Iyasus (his name and affiliation are provided with slight deviations in the colophons). Unit 1 was somewhat later expanded with Unit 2 containing texts dedicated to John the Baptist . The name of Takla ʾEwosṭatewos , the governor (sǝyyum) of Dabra Maʿḍo, is written in the supplication formulas over erasures (e.g., on check the viewerfols. 3ra, 6va, 9va, 19vb, 28ra ). The monk Zabāna Krǝstos scribe (attested for 1664-1671) later added concluding supplications with his name on some folia (check the viewerfols. 8ra, 28vb, 30va, 33ra, 34vb, 39vb ), and the miracles Content Item 1.2.31 of codicological unit 1 , item 1.2 Five Pains of the Virgin and Content Item 1.2.32 of codicological unit 1 , item 1.2 A poor monk whom Mary gave a garment .

Careful, regular; by a trained scribe. Slender, upright or slightly right sloping script. Slightly divergent downstrokes, horizontal tops. Rounded letter shapes. The numerals have dashes above and below (with the exception of ፪ on Similar to Hand 2.
