Notes
(A monk and consecrated priest who resided in Dayr as-Suryān↗ in the 19th or early 20th century.
The modern Arabic manuscript description placed on a paper sheet inside Egypt, Dayr as-Suryān, DS Ethiop. 13 states that Mīḫāʾīl al-Ḥabašī was born in ʿAddi Näfas↗ in Eritrea and that his mother's name was Lītā Māryām, possibly a transcription of Walatta Māryām. In Egypt, Dayr as-Suryān, DS Ethiop. 9, the name of Walatta Māryām↗ was erased and substituted with that of Gabra Mikāʾel↗ . There is no indication in the manuscript as to whether both persons were related. On the basis of the data from Egypt, Dayr as-Suryān, DS Ethiop. 9 one can assume that Mīḫāʾīl al-Ḥabašī is an Arabic adaptation of the name Gabra Mikāʾel.
The website of the church St Mary in Rawḍ al-Farag in Cairo states that a qummuṣ Mīḫāʾīl al-Ḥabašī lived in this church, until Cyril VI↗ ordered all monks to return to their monasteries. This decree was issued by Cyril VI in 1960, O’Mahony 2007. Since it was impossible for him to return to his native country, he went to Dayr as-Suryān↗ , were he died. Whether this person is identical with the Gabra Mikāʾel/Mīḫāʾīl al-Ḥabašī mentioned in the manuscripts of Dayr as-Suryān↗ can only be speculated.
It cannot be excluded that Gabra Mikāʾel mentioned in the manuscripts Egypt, Dayr as-Suryān, DS Ethiop. 9, Egypt, Dayr as-Suryān, DS Ethiop. 10 and Egypt, Dayr as-Suryān, DS Ethiop. 13 might refer to more than one person.
