( ) This book belongs to Lǝj Abay (baptismal name is deleted), son of Ato Wäldä Maryam, whose baptismal name is Wäldä Śǝllase . . . . It is written in the year of Matthew, the Evangelist, in 1917 EC [= 1924–5], when Empress Zewditu, daughter of Menilek was Emperor [sic] of Ethiopia, and along with her the regent, his Highness, Ras Täfäri; and our prince is Wag Šum Käbädä and our archbishop is Abba Matewos from the throne of Mark, the Apostle. The scribe is Aläqa Dǝnqayähu, whose baptismal name is Gäbrä Ṣadǝq. Praise to God and to his mother, the Virgin Mary forever and ever, Amen and Amen
