Contents
Four Gospels (CAe 1560) Each Gospel is divided into sections, (አርእስት፡), which correspond approximately to the old τίτλοι. The total number of sections is 217, according to a note at the end of the manuscript. This manuscript contains the first recension of the Gospels, made from a Greek original (Alexandrinan recension). This is shown by the following indications: The proper names have all kept their Greek form, often even with case endings, for example:
ሄሮድያዳ፡ Ἡροδιάδα, Matthew 14:3
ሲዶና፡ Σιδῶνα, Mark 3:8
ቴዎፍሊ፡ Θεόφιλε, Luke 1:3
ዘጌርጌሴኖን፡ Γερασηνῶν, Luke 8:37
ጥብርያዶስ፡ Τιβεριάδος, John 6:1 and 6:23; John 21:1
etc.
Several Greek words have not been translated, for example:ስናፔ፡ for σίναπι at Matthew 13:31; Mark 4:31; Luke 13:19; Luke 17:6;
ስለን፡ for σέλινον at Matthew 23:23;
ቀራንዮ፡ for κρανίιυ
(τόπος) at Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:22; Luke 23:33; John 19:17
ስፍንገ፡ for σπόγγος at Matthew 27:48; Mark 15:26; John 19:29;
ቆድራጢስ፡ for κοδράντης at Mark 12:42;
ናርዱ፡ for νάρδος at Mark 14:3;
ስጴራ፡ for σπεῖρα at Mark 15:16;
ሰበን፡for σάβανον at Luke 19:20; John 11:44; John 20:7;
ጰስጥቂስ፡ for πιστική at John 12:3;
ሊቶስጥሮስ፡ for λιθόστρωτον at John 19:13;
etc. Some misunderstandings can only be explained by a Greek original, for example:ἤδη at Matthew 3:10; Matthew 14:15 is translated by ናሁ፡(ἴδε)
εύνοῶν at Matthew 5:25 is translated by ጠቢብ፡ (ἐννοῶν)
ὁροποιεῖν at Mark 2:23 is translated by ወይጺሑ፡ ሎቱ፡ ፍኖቶ፡
ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι at Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22 and Luke 17:25 is translated by ያመክርዎ፡ or ታሜክሮ፡ (δοκιμάζειν)
μετά at Mark 13:24 is translated by ምስለ፡
ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά at Luke 1:5 are translated by በመዋዕለ፡ አብያ፡ (ἐν ἡμέραις Ἀβιά; at Luke 1, 8 the translator omitted the words ἐξ ἐφημερίας)
πέδαις Φυλασσόμενος at Luke 8:29 are translated by ወየዐክብዎ፡ ደቀ፡ (παιδίοις)
ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ at Luke 9:31 are translated by ስብሐቲሁ፡ (δόξαν)
καὶ τὰ σκύλα αὐτοῦ διαδώσει at Luke 11:22 are translated by ንዋየ፡ ሐቅል፡(τὰ σκεύη)
etc.
