A miniature showing an Angel, typically Gabriel↗ , in the act of informing the Virgin St Mary↗ that she will become the mother of Jesus (Lk 1:28), with additional details informed by apocryphal sources such as the Protoevangelium of James (11-12). The main typologies attested in the Ethiopian tradition are:
- Type 1
Mary is portrayed in the act of spinning.
- Type 2
Mary is portrayed in the act of praying.
- Type 3
Mary is portrayed in the act of reading.
