General description
Hiob Ludolf 's Commentarius was published in 1691 , but it is strictly connected with the Historia Aethiopica, published ten years before, in 1681 , by the same author. Ludolf wrote these works in parellel: the Historia to contain, without interrumption, all the informations about the Ethiopian history and the commentary to discuss this documentation, to quote and correct the sources that he used. So the Commentarius served as a link between Ludolf's Historia and the other works that give information about the same theme. The structure of the Commentarius reflects this function: the work follows the order of the notes of the Historia and the division into four books and it shows, at the same time, a lot of extracts from other works, belonging to different literary genres. Ludolf wanted to publish the Commentarius immediately after the Historia, but his diplomatic commitments forced him to postpone the publication of the work. For this reason, before the publication of the Commentarius, three different translations of the History were published:
- an English translation, in two different editions: A new history of Ethiopia, 1684
- a French translation: Nouvelle histoire d'Abissinie ou d'Ethiopie, 1684
- a Dutch translation, in two differente editions: Nieuwe doch aanmerkens-waardige historie van Abissinien, 1687 Nieuwe doch aanmerkens-waardige historie van Abissinien, 1687 ; Historise beschryvinge van Abissinien, 1688

Encoding Description
The source of the encoded text is the transcription, made on Transkribus, of a set of images of the Commentarius, acquired from The Internet Archive, after choosing between different sets of images available. The encoder, Giulia Casella, aligned the set of images, corrected the segmentation and layout analysis produced in the tool and exported the text for further encoding of named entities and alignment of reference information. The encoding of the work is linked with the Beta maṣāḥǝft Schema, and it is made following the BetaMasaheft Guidelines.
Encoded according to the Beta maṣāḥǝft Guidelines. These Guidelines detail the TEI format ruled by the Beta maṣāḥǝft Schema. The present TEI file is enriched with an Xquery transformation taking advantage of the exist-db database instance where the data is stored and of the many external resources to which this data points to.
