He was born at Marḥābete↗ in 1878.
Period of Activity
He was a prominent politician and a leading intellectual of the Ḫāyla Śǝllāse I↗ I era. His personality was shaped by both traditional and modern education. He received a traditional education in the areas of Manz↗ and Sälale↗ . Then, he joined the famous school of Ǝnṭoṭṭo Raguʾel↗ where he met his mentor and teacher Wäldä Giyorgis↗ who gave him the name Ḫǝruy by which he has come to be known in history. Later Ḫǝruy acquainted with foreign ideas and languages. He learned English at Swedish mission school in northern outskirts of ʾAddis ʾAbabā↗ . He was also able to acquire some French through association with a French veterinary team. He was also frequently travelling abroad. He served as a secretary of ʾAddis ʾAbabā↗ municipality from 1914-15, as acting mayor of ʾAddis ʾAbabā↗ from 1919-1921, as chief judge of special court from1922-1926, as a director-general of foreign minister from1927-30 and finally as a foreign minister from 1931-36. Ḫǝruy has left his mark on national life, not only as a diligent civil servant but also as a prolific writer. He has to his name over 20 books and booklets.
Death
He died in exile at England ↗ in 1938.
