Binding
Fine Ethiopic bookbinding with tooled leather cover preserved in its slip case.
Two thick and heavy wooden boards. Fine blind-tooled, red leather cover. The impressions are not deep therefore they are scarsely legible. The inner surface of the boards is completely covered by wide turn-ins and . The decorative pattern on the upper and lower boards is the same. Three frames formed by triple straight lines surround a central latin cross. The outer frame is formed by a criss-cross motif. The middle frame is filled with rosettes, palm shape motifs and . The inner frame is composed by the impression of a X-Form tool. The central panel is divided in an upper rectangular area, 120 mm high, and a bottom area 60 mm high. The upper part is occupied by a latin cross formed by the ripetition of X-Form motif, enclosed in triple straight lines. At the ends of the cross there are corni-form motifs and three double circles. In the bottom area there are two groups of five double circles. This motif together with triple straight lines is found also at the intersection of the straight lines, on the board edges, on the upper part of the spine, and on the turn-ins. Slit-braid endbands are present and sewn to the bookblock with a thread of animal origin. The headband is sewn starting from the upper board, linking the braid to the first sewing station, while the tailband is sewn starting from the lower board, linking the braid to the last sewing station.Sewing Stations
4 Small holes, close to the head and tail of the codex, are visible, in addition to those used for sewing the endbands. THe first and last quire have a protective function. The first quire and the two inner bifolia of the last quire are made of parchment of inferior quality than the rest of the codex. In fact, the bifolia are thicker and the flesh side is not perfectly smoothed. The book is kept inside its two-parts slip-case made of stiff leather.Binding decoration

Pricking
- (Subtype: pattern) The layout corresponds to the pattern I defined by D. Nosnitsin: the text is written above the first ruled line, the vertical and horizontal pricks are visible and they are located in the margins. Priks are little and circular. Probably the pricking was made opening the quire in the middle and piercing the folios together.
