Palaeography
Hand 1
Script: Ethiopic
Fine and careful.
Ink: Black, red.
Rubrication: Nomina sacra; headings and incipits of the texts (in alternating red and black lines); parts of the Letter of Eusebius to Carpianus; elements of the Canon tables; the word mǝʿrāf; “tituli” written in the upper margin; lines starting and closing the list of the “tituli” (fols. 6r, 41va, 71vb, 109vb); numbers of the “tituli”; closing line of each Gospel with the stichometry; elements of the punctuation signs; elements of the Ethiopic numerals; Chi Rho signs; legends above and below the miniatures.
Date: First half of the 16th century.
First half of the 16th century. - There is a small red cross and a small black cross on the margins of some fols. (above the Chi-Ro sign). Their function has not been determined (e.g., check the viewer32rb l.11, 32va l.36, 33rb l.1, 35va l.10). Also, the Chi Ro sign in the Gospel of Mark, Luke and John is much less often used than in the Gospel of Matthew. - Some “tituli” are written in tiny letters in black ink in the upper margin, at the very edge of pages. Perhaps they served the scribe to plan how to distribute the text. At times they are partly cut off (check the viewer18rv , 19r, 27r, 28r, 29r, 33r, 37rv, 39r, 40v, 48r, 77r, 80ra, 101rb, 101vb, 102rab). Ethiopic numeral “6” looks like “compressed” numeral “7” (s., e.g., lists of the “tituli”), but the numerals have “rings”.Select one of the keywords listed from the record to see related data
