Period of Activity
He was a medieval saint referred to as a son of the prince. As a child he was imprisoned and tortured together with his brothers on the order of his own father. The account resembles stories that are told in the royal Ethiopian chronicles, where it said that ʾaṣe role: title Zarʾa Yāʿqob↗ acted resolutely against his sons after charges were made against them that they were practicing pagan rites. Thus, Batra Gelā Māryām↗ could possibly be identified with ʾaṣe role: title Baʾǝda Māryām I↗ , son and successor of ʾaṣe role: title Zarʾa Yāʿqob↗ . His acts are only preserved in the form of three miracles in the Taʾammǝra Māryām. The name is attested only in the variants በቴርጌላ፡ ማርያም፡, ቤቴርጌላ፡ ማርያም፡ and በርቴግላ፡ ማርያም፡. t:bibl proposes the reconstruction በትረ፡ ጌላ፡ ማርያም፡.
