Virgin and Child
Jacopo Gnisci
General description
A miniature showing the St Mary together with the infant Jesus Christ . It frequently features two angels in the background, generally identified as Gabriel and Michael . In examples of the Second Gondarine Style and Post Gondarine Style it is common to find a donor. The theme is one of the most frequently depicted subjects in Ethiopian manuscript illustration. It is not surprising, then, that a number of typologies are attested in the Ethiopian tradition. These are:
- Type I
Eleusa, Eleousa, Virgin of Tenderness, Madonna Eleusa, Panagia Eleousa
- Type II
Galaktotrophousa, Nursing Madonna, Virgo Lactans, Madonna Lactans.
- Type III
Hodegetria
- Type III-b
Salus Populi Romani
