Equestrian Saint
Jacopo Gnisci
General description
As in other Christian traditions, the Coptic especially, representations of saints on horseback appear frequently and in a range of media in Ethiopian and Eritrean art. In Ethiopic manuscripts, saints on horseback appear from the turn of the fifteenth century onwards. Typically, portraits of the saints on horseback appear as full-page miniatures, though other variants exist. The most frequently depicted saint on horseback is St George↗ .
