He was a Protestant educated traditional Ethiopian scholar. In 1886, he became a member of the Bethel congregation in ʾƎmkullu↗ and was employed by the mission in translation and teaching work. In 1905, Tāyya Gabra Māryām↗ left Ethiopia↗ to Berlin↗ where he stayed there as a visiting scholar, acting as a resource person and co-worker to Mittwoch↗ . After he returned from Berlin↗ in 1908, he faced opposition due to his religious views. But he enjoyed a peaceful years under the reigns of ʾIyāsu (V)↗ and Zawditu↗ . He authored most of his works including his famous work, History of the people of Ethiopia during those years.
