He was a traditional Ethiopian painter. He received a traditional church education in Dabra Bizan↗ . After his ordination as a deacon, ʾƎsṭazyā↗ continued his education in qǝne bet and Zemā bet. He studied church painting in the same monastery, possibly under the guidance of Gabra Giyorgis↗ from Goǧǧām↗ . It seems that ʾƎsṭazyā↗ 's main interest was monumental wall-painting. He painted murals in the churches of Tǝgrāy↗ , Gondar↗ and Eritrea↗ .
