Comparative and etymological data
from Amharic ግምጃ gǝmǧā , Tigrinya ግምጃ gǝmǧā 822; the meaning of ‘gǝmǧā’ has undergone change over time: originally the word referred to precious fabric whereas nowadays it is used for ordinary cotton. 1918a defines it as ‘cloth of silk and gold thread’. According to 272 it is coloured cloth made of cotton or silk. In contemporary Amharic it refers to cotton cloth, white or coloured (p.c. Wondwosen Adane).
