check the viewerFols. 1r, 2r Letter from Stephen Gaselee to Canon R. M. Woolley, 14. January 1931 (Typewritten letter from Stephen Gaselee to the Reverend role: title Canon R. M. Woolley, D.D. , 14 January 1931 in which he congratulates Canon Wolley on his work "The Occasional Offices of the Coptic Church" and proposes that he should undertake the publication of a work dealing with the Church of Abyssinia. There are two documents. The first is a questionnaire put to the Abyssinians through the Bishop of Khartum . The Regent (now the Emperor) took a personal interest in the answers. A rough translation in French was made. It treats very elaborately of the precise doctrinal position of Abyssinian Christianity. The second document, called Wāzemā or Vigil, is a short book put together by the Foreign Minister of Abyssinia, Belatengheta Herui , to celebrate the Coronation of the Emperor. It was partly translated into English but needs to be revised and corrected. Canon Douglas would be willing to accept these two documents for publication at his 'Faith Press'.)

check the viewerFols. 4r, 5r Letter of Stephen Gaselee to Godfrey Driver, 18 November 1931 (Typewritten letter, on Foreign Office notepaper, of Stephen Gaselee to Godfrey Driver , Ref. L 6180/293/405, 18 November 1931 , in which he asks Driver to recommend to him anyone who would be willing to do work on the two documents dealing with Abyssinian subjects (described in Content Item 1 of codicological unit 1 Letter from Stephen Gaselee to Canon R. M. Woolley, 14. January 1931 ). Of both of these there are rather imperfect translations, but it is clear that with a little editorial work they could be made into something which would be of considerable interest and might appear either in the form of a small book or in some periodical such as 'The Christian East'. Canon R. M. Woolley was entrusted with them, but unfortunately he died, and the documents were returned to Gaselee . The letter ends with the following remark: 'There seems to be at the present moment a scarcity of Ethiopic scholars in this country, and that is why I venture to ask your advice'.)

He encloses a copy of his letter written the week before to Driver, explaining their contents to him briefly, and asks Mr. Wright if he might send him the documents with the translations in order to see whether they could be turned to advantage in the manner suggested.)

There is no immediate hurry to deal with them, as one of the documents has been in his hands for almost four years and the other for almost one year . It is just that Gaselee wants to drop the idea of making them available to people in the West interested in Abyssinian affairs.)

The questionnaire seems to have been compiled by Miss Paine-Smith and to have been sent to Bishop Gwynne in the later years of the war asking him to obtain answers to it from Abyssinia. The bishop sent it through to Addis Ababa↗ and the Abyssinian theologians set to work on it to answer the questions. It is said that a large part of it was contributed by the present Emperor of Abyssinia , who is himself greatly interested in theological questions. The exact date when Miss Paine-Smith compiled it and sent it does not appear in the papers available to Gaselee.)

[link]). He also sends another translation which Gaselee obtained from Abyssinia but which, on final consideration, they decided not to publish as Rev. Matthew's (cf. ) would be made with the help of Abyssinian scholars and theologians.)
Explicit (English ):I may add that when I was talking over the Amharic document with the Negus, Haile Selassie, he told me that it was the case that he himself drafted a very large part of the answers and that his method had been to meet with his theologians, whose names he was not willing to give me, and after drafting the reply with their agreement to complete the text.
