Foundation story
Local tradition claims that the first church on this site was built by King ʿĀmda Ṣǝyon I↗ (r. 1314-1334). Among the local tābots, one is dedicated to tabot: Maṭṭāʿ/Libānos↗ , and one to tabot: ʾabbā role: title ʾAnānyā↗ , head of Dabra Ṣarābi↗ , one of the main ʾEwosṭatean↗ communities. An ancient (Aksumite?) pillar stands in the doorway of the gate house, and another one is included in the masonry of the wall. Several window grills, carved of stone, have been inserted in the windows of the gate house and of a half-ruined building to the left from the entrance. Samāz is mentioned in one of the documents of the "Golden Gospel" of Dabra Libānos of Hām. An Additio to the Maṣḥāfa āslǝṭi written by Zawalda Māryām↗ , a local mid-18th-cent. scribe, recounts that the sanctuary of Samāz was built by ʾabuna ʿAṣfa Dǝngǝl↗ “on three stone pillars”. Samāz was favored by ras role: title ʾArʾāya Śǝllāse↗ (ca. 1869-88), a son of King Yoḥannǝs IV↗ , who donated at least one book to the church.
