The Ms. was resewn with recent threads of different type, e.g., check the viewer7r , 19r, 27r, 51r, 59r, 83r. The cover is missing; traces of leather are visible on the inner face of the front board. The back board originates from a different codex. Quire IX (originally V) and quire XVI (originally XIV) are misplaced. Some fols. are damaged at the edges and centre folds by insects and rodents, e.g., fols. 1-6, 31-37, 127-136). Some fols. are stained with wax, e.g., check the viewer47v-49v , 55r-59v. Palaeography
Hand 1
Script: Ethiopic
Mediocre and irregular
Ink: Black, red (vivid red, vivid vermillion, strong vermillion).
Rubrication: Rubrication is executed in different tones of red: vivid red (e.g., fols. 3ra-4vb), vivid vermillion (e.g., fol. 15rb), strong vermillion (e.g., fol. 13rb); in some cases it differs even within one fol. (e.g., fols. 7r, 16r, 18r, 31r, 32v). It cannot be excluded that the rubrication was partly executed by a different hand. Nomina sacra and the name of the church Ṗarāqliṭos; incipit of Text I-1 (2 red lines alternating with black lines); incipit of Text I-2 (3 red lines above alternating with black lines, 2 red lines below) and its sections; incipit of Text I-3 and its numbers; words ʾǝsaggǝd, "I worship", mǝʿrāf, "chapter" and its abbreviations; elements of the punctuation signs; elements of Ethiopic numerals. Lacunae for (rubricated) names occasionally not filled (e.g. fols. 47ra, 98va, 120ra).
Date: Late 17th-18th century
The handwriting is similar, but not identical to that of AP-008 and AP-064. Late 17th-18th centuryIt is difficult to determine whether one or more scribes were involved in writing. The handwriting changes from usually mediocre and irregular to careful and neat (e.g., check the viewer7v /8r, 63rv, 100v/101r). Irregularities are e.g.,
- size of letters significantly differs, also within one column (cp., check the viewer32va b, 82ra against 82vb);
- space between letters significantly differs (cp., check the viewer9vb against 10ra, 75v against 76r, 99vb);
- occasionally the ruling was disregarded: text is written between lines, last ruling line is not used (cp., check the viewer12ra-17vb ).
However, a few distinctive features appear, though not quite regularly throughout the entire Ms.:
- ancient form of 'one' (፩, triangular upwards-oriented)
- ancient form of 'six' (፮, looking like "compressed" number 'seven')
- occasionally short hairlines extending horizontal elements of some letters (e.g. check the viewer8ra : ሔ, ን እ, ይ, ደ, ገ)
- the right loop of ሠ (in all vowel orders) is of smaller size.
