He was born at Zage↗ in 1868.
Period of Activity
He was a painter, novelist, grammarian, poet, educator and public servant, is considered the pioneer of Amharic prose fiction. He received traditional education from his grandfather Dǝnqe↗ at Wǝrrā Kidāne Mǝḥrat↗ Monastery in Zage↗ . He also studied in Italy↗ from 1887-1889. When rās role: title ↗ was in his diplomatic mission to Italy↗ ʾAfawarq Gabra ʾIyasus served him as an interpreter, and returned with him to Ethiopia↗ . He served the Imperial government in various positions: in 1922 Custom Director to Dǝrre Dāwā↗ with naggādrās role: title ↗ , in 1924 President of the Special Arbitration Court, in 1932 Ethiopia↗ representative in Italy↗ . When Ethiopia was liberated in 1941, he was accused of treason for siding with the Italians during the war and was arrested later sentenced to death. But ʾaṣe role: title ↗ commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
