Birth
He was born at a place called Kurtam near Baṭnān (Batnae) in 451.
Period of Activity
He became a monk at the age of 22 in 473. In his final years, he became a bishop of his native Baṭnān in 519. He is best known for his extensive poetic output. It is believed that he composed 760 metrical homilies of which perhaps 250 have survived. He also composed hymns and numerous letters. His several compositions are also extant in Ethiopic. These works were translated from Arabic into Gǝʿǝz during the reign of King Zarʾa Yāʿqob↗ to be read on newly established feasts for various saints.
