General information
description: Gorgorā is a peninsula on the north of the LakeṬānā↗ . It is 12 km wide in its southern part and stands on a strategical location, an elevated rocky promontory overlooking the lake and next to a series of islands suitable for providing shelter. The peninsula is located in today's ʾAmhārā↗ Regional State while it once formed part of Dambǝyā↗ . Gorgorā gained its prominence under the Jesuits as a missionary residence and a major Catholic church thanks to a land grant offered by ? Susǝnyos↗ in 1607. In 1611, Susǝnyos↗ established a katamā↗ in Gorgorā and in 1621 he asked the Jesuits to build a royal palace to the south-west, in an area that became known as New Gorgorā↗ . After the restoration of Orthodoxy, New Gorgorā↗ was the first residence to be abandoned by the missionaries and, in 1665, ? Fāsiladas↗ ordered the burning of the "books of Franks". The Italians seized the Gorgorā peninsula on 14 April 1936 and in 1938 inaugurated the Faro della Conquista↗ on the Vetta Mussolini↗ .
