He was a linguist and Philologist. He was involved in the Mission archéologique française in Ethiopia, from 1953 to 1955. He was also a director of Annales d'Éthiopie since its foundation in 1955. He published numerous articles that covered several topics, from editions of Gǝʿǝz and Amharic texts to works on South Arabian paleography and divine kingships.
