Condition
The leather cover is worn-out, the spine and the cover of the lover board are lost but the turn-ins and the textile inlay are still preserved. The areas of the boards not covered by the leather are darkened. The leaves are stained with dirt and water. The slip case is highly damaged. The flap is torn, the carrying strap has been replaced with a thinner one and the upper part of the case is missing.
Binding
Ethiopic bookbinding with tooled leather cover and textile inlay preserved in its slip case.
Well polished wooden board, carved from a yellowish wood with slightly bevelled edges. On the upper border of the lower board there is a hardly legible ge'ez inscription in pencil. Blind-tooled brown leather cover. The decoration is composed by three frames that surround a central latin cross. The frames are enclosed between double straight lines. The outer frame is formed by the repetition of a criss-cross motif. The middle frame is filled with double circles at the corners and at the intersections. The inner frame is composed by a hardly legible tool showing a criss-cross pattern. The central latin cross is composed by X-form motifs. At the ends of the cross, corniformmotifs are present. The board edges are decorated with double straight line and double circles. The turn-ins are 55 mm wide and an additional leather patch covers the holes for the board attachment. The turn-ins are decorated with double straight lines crossing each other, forming rectangles with a X-form within and a double circle at the intersections. The textile inlay seems to be made of silk, a blue brocade with flowers. The endbands are not preserved but between fols. 51-52 there is the remain of a tie down.Sewing Stations
4 check the viewerFols. 14, 65 : Leaf string markers (long twisted two-color threads) are foud between fols. 14-15 and fols. 65-66, they could have been used as bookmark. Small holes are present close to the head and tail of the quires, prabably remains of the tackets. The book is kept inside a slip case made of a single piece of coarse leather.Binding decoration
On the front and back cover are visible the traces of metal bosses (the nail is still presereved inside the board). There were three on each board, at the end of the arms of the cross.
