Birth
She was born in Dabra Bǝrhān↗ to a noted Šawān family, her father was a daǧǧāzmāč.
Period of Activity
She made a pilgrimage to Dabra Libānos↗ and to Jerusalem↗ . In 1935-36 she became the organizer and the vice-president of the Ethiopian Women Association and ecouraged women to join the Ethiopian Red Cross. In the years 1936-1941 she was actively involved in propaganda, provision of supplies, intelligence work and armed struggle. In July 1936 she played an active role in the Šawān patriot's unsuccessful attempt to liberate Addis Ababa. In February 1937, after the attack on Rodolfo Graziani↗ , she was captured and exiled to Italy↗ , where she lived as political prisoner on Asinara↗ and later on Ponza↗ . In 1939 she was repatriated and resumed her underground work under the pseudonym of Tänaññä Wärq Ḫaylä Śǝllase↗ . In 1940 she managed to establish a secret connection between Mammo Ḫaylä Mikaʾel↗ and Gäbrä Mädḫǝn Ḫaylä Maryam ↗ . This operation led to the elimination of documents related to targeted places and persons. In the same year 1940 , she played an important role in the storming and fall of the Italian military forts at Ǧaldu-Mäḉḉa↗ and Addis ʿAläm↗ . She was captured by the Italians in the camp of Gäräsu Duki↗ , imprisoned and senteced to death, but then released by the British forces. In 1949 she pilgrimaged to Amba Gǝšän Maryam↗ and to Lālibalā↗ , where she died. Š.G. is remembered as an example of genuine patriotism. The writers of her time referred to her as the "Ethiopian Joan of Arc" and the "Lion-Hearted Woman" of Ethiopia↗ . After 1941 she was honoured by Ḫāyla Śǝllāse I↗ . A street in Addis Ababa↗ bears her name.
