He was the most outstanding Italian scholar of Ethiopian studies in the second half of the 20th century. He was a pupil of Conti Rossini↗ , who was represented as the last scholar in the tradition of studies founded by Guidi↗ . Ricci graduated from the University of Rome↗ in Humanities in 1938 with a thesis in Ethiopian studies supervised by Conti Rossini↗ . Then, he started his service in Africa Orientale Italiana and worked as an auxiliary officer in the army until 1941. In 1947, he started to work as an assistant Professor in Storia e lingue dʾ Abissinia at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Rome↗ . He was a lecturer from 1952 to 1962. In 1962 he became full Professor of Amharic at the Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples↗ and kept the chair till 1986, and as emeritus till 1991. He was the chief editor of Rassegna di Studi Etiopici for a half century, from 1964 to 2003. He was also the eidtor of several Gǝʿǝz texts.
Death
He died at Rome↗ in 2007.
