He was a leading 19th century Semiticist. He spent most of his adult life in France↗ where he lead a distinguished career as Orientalist and archaeologist, publishing numerous studies on Semitic languages and epigraphy as well as on the Bible. In 1868, he came to Ethiopia↗ to investigate the situation of ቤተ፡ እስራኤል፡↗ and documented a report on the circumstance of ቤተ፡ እስራኤል፡↗ in those days. In his report, he also provided a useful information about Ethiopia↗ during the last years of Tewodros II↗ . In 1879, he began teaching Gǝʿǝz in Paris↗ . In 1893, he founded the Revue sémitique d'épigraphie et d'histoire ancienne in which he published much of his work.
