History
history: It was a historic province in northern Ethiopia↗ and until 1970s a waradā, south of Tämben↗ and of Saḥart↗ , west of Waǧǧarāt↗ , at the southern borders of central Bǝḥerāwi Kǝllǝlāwi Mangǝśti Tǝgrāy↗ . It was governed under its won governors, the Šum Salawā. The people of Salawā were a strong supporters of the Christian kings during the turbulent sixteenth century: Lǝbna Dǝngǝl↗ fighting at Salawā in 1539, during his war against ʾAḥmad↗ . In the 17th century, Salawā was one of a number of areas placed under the rule of ? Yolyos↗ . In the 18th century, Salawā was one of the several localities whose rulers ʾIyāsu I↗ interrogated in 1698 about taxes levied in Bǝḥerāwi Kǝllǝlāwi Mangǝśti Tǝgrāy↗ , while ʾIyāsu II↗ is reported to have visited the district in 1749. In 1930s, it was a sub-district of Tämben↗ province. In Salawā there are several rock-hewn churches. Not all have been documented, such as one Gawi↗ .
