General information
description: Located on the north shore of the lak, close to Gorgorā↗ , Mandābbā Madḫāne ʿĀlam is the second largest monastery of the lake Ṭānā↗ region after Dāgā ʾƎsṭifānos↗ . It had lands in the districts of Sowit↗ , ʾAlafā↗ and Takʷǝsā↗ and, although they much reduced over time, they remained much greater than those of most other monasteries. The church was richly endowed and painted and still preserves paintings and objects of value. The paintings currently in the church were executed in 1983 by Tawalda Gabra Bǝrhan↗ . The monastery holds a collection of manuscripts including Maṣḥāfa Ḥāwi, a short history of the monastery and a recently produced paper copy of the same produced by ? Za-Manfas Qǝddus Gabra Ṣādǝqān↗ , the illumnated 14th cent. Acts of the Apostles and the 18th cent. Dǝrsāna Mikāʾel with 54 miniatures and the portrait on fols. 4v and 14v of its former owners, the noble couple Gabra Lǝʾul↗ and Marʿāta Giyorgis↗ .
Foundation date
14th century
Foundation story
It was allegedly founded in the 14th cent. by ? Yāsāy↗ , son of ? ʿAmda Ṣǝyon I↗ .
History
history: The main church established by ? Yāsāy↗ seems to have survived most invasions undamaged and, according to the tradition, in the 16th cent. , Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm al-Ġāzī↗ was chased away from the monastery by ? Gabriel↗ and Michael↗ . In the 17th cent. the church was renovated by ? Fāsiladas↗ . This monastery was an important centre of learning and played a significant role in the religious disputes between Tawāḥǝdo and Qǝbāt teaching. Mandābbā Madḫāne ʿĀlam was not affected by the Mahdist invasions in the 19th cent. . In the 20th cent. , Mǝnilǝk II↗ and ? Zawditu↗ donated books to the library of the monastery, while Ḫāyla Śǝllāse I↗ provided for an extensive renovation of the old church and ? Manan ʾAsfāw↗ financed an adjoining church for women. The church survived the Darg period fairly well.
