Origin
Original Location: Dǝrbā Dabra ʾAbuna Yāsāy↗
1733-1755 (?). In the supplication formula of check the viewer2ra (incipit page of Text I-1) and check the viewer5rb are mentioned ʾIyasu as king, Walatta Giyorgis as queen, and Walda Lǝʿul as ras. On check the viewer109rb , is mentioned only King ʾIyasu together with Queen Walatta Giyorgis. ʾIyasu II was King of Ethiopia in 1730-55 (cp. EAE III, 251-52); Walatta Giyorgis is the baptismal name of Bǝrhān Mogasā (known as Mǝntǝwwāb; cp. EAE I, 534-35 and also EAE III, 251-52), mother of ʾIyāsu II, who ruled with him. Ras Walda Lǝʿul (d. 1767; about him cp. EAE IV, 1104) was the brother of Walatta Giyorgis. He received the title of rās in 1733. Quires XXII-XXIX are probably of a later time.Provenance
Gabra Masqal is mentioned in most of the supplication formulas of the text (e.g., check the viewer8rb , 8va, 17ra, 67vb), usually with "his lady and beloved" (ʾǝgzǝʾtu wa-fǝqǝrtu) Walatta Qǝddusan. On check the viewer2ra and 5rb, her name occurs together with those of King ʾIyasu, Queen Walatta Giyorgis and ? Walda Lǝʿul, all of them mentioned as her children; later in the text she is mentioned, more specifically, as the mother of Queen Walatta Giyorgis (esp. check the viewer156ra , 165vab) and of ? Walda Lǝʿul (esp. check the viewer156rb ).
