Fāris
Solomon Gebreyes
Period of Activity
He was a minor feudal lord from a locality Gǝšše↗ in the district of Manz↗ of the province of Šawā↗ . As his life-story exemplifies, the struggle for power that followed the death of King Śarḍa Dǝngǝl↗ could give a war lord vast opportunities for booty and promotion, but for premature death as well. In 1602, with 800 of his warriors, he came to one of the pretenders to the throne, the future ʾaṣe role: titleSusǝnyos↗ . However, ʾaṣe role: titleSusǝnyos↗ suspected perfidy, arrested him and looted his native Manz↗ . Faris fled but after the death of Zadǝngǝl↗ in 1604, he came to Susǝnyos↗ again and concluded an alliance with him. However, after 1605, he decided to go over Susǝnyos↗ 's rival ʾaṣe role: title Yāʿqob↗ , but was arrested again and once more fled to his native Manz↗ . When Susǝnyos↗ came there in December 1605, Faris sought refuge on an amba called Dayär↗ and was killed during its siege.
