General information
description: ʾAzazo Takla Hāymānot is located at the centre of a hilltop, surrounded by a courtyard and a circular stone wall with a square tower.
Foundation date
17th-18th century?
Foundation story
Local priests believe that it was built by ʾaṣe role: title Fāsiladas↗ in the 17th century, while, according to James Bruce↗ , it was built by ʾIyāsu II↗ , meaning it was built only in the 18th century.
History
history: ʾAzazo Takla Hāymānot is one of the so-called 44 churches of Gondar↗ . It is located in the town of ʾAzazo↗ , 13 km southwest of Gondar↗ . This church played an important role in the history of Ethiopian monasticism: following the burning of Dabra Libānos↗ in 1532 and the decision to move the monastic community north in the lake Ṭānā↗ area, the monastic community of Dabra Libānos↗ finally settled in ʾAzazo↗ .
Tābots
tabot: At one hand of the courtyard, there is a semi-circular domed castle where, according to local tradition, the tābot of Mary↗ of Dabra Libānos↗ was first installed when it was moved from Dabra Libānos↗ to ʾAzazo↗ , although the tābot's movements are actually quite complicated to reconstruct.
