General description
A Church service made up of psalms, biblical readings and hymns. This record is the general one to be used when the recension of the work cannot be identified. Four types of Saʿātāt have been identified by Taft 1986:
Saʿātāt za-gǝbṣ: the Coptic Saʿātāt;
Maṣḥafa saʿātāt: the Saʿātāt of Giyorgis of Saglā↗ , which replaced the Saʿātāt za-gǝbṣ: and is presently in use in Ethiopia and Eritrea;
Maṣḥafa saʿātāt: a Saʿātāt that includes the entire Psalter in the daily pensum;
Gize ṣalot: a cursus of prayers which is not really a Saʿātāt, but a Gize ṣalot for hermits and recluses.
