Private collections in Germany
Beta maṣāḥəft is cataloguing several small collections of Gəʿəz manuscripts held by private owners in Germany, who have placed their manuscripts at our disposal for cataloguing and digitization.
The Alice R. Balk Collection
The Balk collection is a small collection of three Gəʿəz manuscripts owned by Leo Balk, purchased in Asmara in 1958/1959 by Alice R. Balk. We are very grateful to Mr Balk for making them available for scientific description and digitization.
The Fricke Collection
The Fricke collection is a small private collection of Gəʿəz manuscripts currently held in Hude, Germany. The five manuscripts – three Psalter codices and two scrolls – were acquired by Dr Eva Omansen (1917-1990) during her stay in Ethiopia (1963-1974), where she worked as a doctor at the Ḫayla Śǝllāse I Hospital in ʾAddis ʾAbabā. We are very grateful to Dr Treeske Fricke and her family for making this collection available for scientific description and digitization.
Hamburg Collection
A further private collection of Gəʿəz manuscripts is currently held in Hamburg, Germany. The eight manuscripts – among them five Psalter codices and one scroll – were acquired in Ethiopia in 1963-1966. We are very grateful to their owners for making this collection available for scientific description and digitization.
The Mueth Collection
The Müth collection consists of one Amharic manuscript owned by Dr Matthias Müth, to whom we are very grateful for making it available for scientific description and digitization
