He was aTǝgryan who was appointed by ʾaṣe role: title ↗ over Wag↗ . He replaced wag šum role: title ↗ who was removed from office for not accompanying the Emperor in his wars against the Egyptians. Shortly after his appointment, there was a rebellion led by the relatives of Täklä Giyorgis II↗ . The rebellion occurred in 1878when he had accompanied ʾaṣe Yoḥannǝs IV↗ into Šawā↗ , but it was easily suppressed. Gabru was then transferred to Dambǝyā↗ in 1882. He fought and defeated the Mahdist forces near Qallābāt↗ in July 1885.
