Condition
The parchment is white and well shaved. Holes occured during the manufacture are present. The small ones have not been repaired while a bigger one on fol. 80 has been repaired using a vegetal thread.
Binding
Fine Ethiopic bookbinding with tooled leather cover, preserved in its slip case.
Two boards carved from a light brown wood. Brown-reddish leather cover decorared with blind tooled motifs. The decoration of the front and the back cover is similar. The edges and the turn-ins are decorated too. An additional leather patch of a lighter color is pasted under the turn-ins of the cover, hiding the board attachment. A textile inlay shows blue flower with a yellow stelo and leaves on a red background. On the front cover, three frames, enclosed in single straight lines surround a central latin cross. The external frame is composed by straight strapwork elements. The middle frame is filled with groups of four or five (at the corners) double circles. The inner frame is composed by a X-form motif. The central cross is formed by three single straight lines. At the ends, three double circles are found. Around the centre of the cross there are four palm shape motifs. Inside the groove there is a brillant red powder, a remain of paint. Double circles are forund also at corners and intersections. The edges are decorated with four double circle connected by double or triple single straight lines. The back cover is similar to the front cover with the exception that the frames are separated by double straight lines and at the base of the cross, two small mountains are represented, formed by two double straight lines with four double circles on top. On the spine, triple straight lines form three rectangles in which the lines cross each other forming a X. At the intersections a double circle is placed. On the turn-ins, the single straight lines form four rectangles within they cross each other diagonally.Sewing Stations
3 There are no signs of the presence of endbands on the cover spine but there are small holes close to the head and tail of the quires. The first quire has a protective function. The book is kept inside its two-parts slip case, made of stiff leather with a carrying string. Inside the inner case is attached a string to help to lift the book out of the case.Binding material
