Condition
The leather cover is slightly torn and scratched. The original cover has been reiforced gluing a leather strip along the spine. The parchment is white, thin and perfectly shaved.
Binding
Ethiopic bookbinding with richly tooled leather cover, preserved in its slip case.
Two heavy wooden boards carved from a light-brown wood. Fine blind tooled, light brown leather cover. The decoration is present also on the spine and on the turn-ins. Three frames surround a central panel with a cross and floral motifs. The frames are enclosed between quadruple straight lines. The outer frame is formed by the repetition of criss-cross motif. The middle frame is filled with rosettes at the corners, double circles in group of four or close to a palm shape motif. The inner frame is formed by the repetition of X-form motif. The cross in the central panel is formed by a different type of X-form tool, double cirles at the ends and corniform pattern. Palm shaped motif in group of four and double circles ornate the ends of the cross. The cross is surrounded by a floral motif, created using double straight lines, palm shaped motifs representing flowers and leaves. The tools used on the strip of leather added on the spine are different: triple straight lines and a different criss-cross motif. The spine is decorated with triple straight lines dividing the spine in 6 panels. Double circle are found at intersections. The turn-ins are wide, an additional leather patch is present so that a central square of 100 x 100 mm is coverd by a textile inlay. The textile is a plain dark blue cloth with vertical narrow yellow lines. The turn-ins are decorated with crossing quadruple lines and rosettes at the intersections. The rosette motif is formed by a central dot surrounded by ten petals. Slit-braid endband in two colors added during the reparing treatment, sewn to the new spine covering with a thread of animal origin.Sewing Stations
4 The spine has been repaired adding a new covering that overlaps the boards for approximately 50 mm. The leather reinforcing is formed by two layers projecting beyond the endbands (5 mm) at the head and tail of the bookblock. The first layer covers the cap area. This folded piece of leather is used to sew the endband so that the stitches are not visible on the spine. The layer has extensions that are pasted down under the original turn-ins. The second layer is the actual covering of the spine. It is sewn to the first layer at head and tail caps. Its extensions are pasted down directly above the original turn-ins. The first quire has a protective function. The book is preserved in its richly blind-tooled leather case. It is composed by two parts. The inner case is colored in violet with a light brown border stitched to the flap with a green sewing thread. Every surface is decorated with a pattern that recalls the one of the book cover, using the same tools (quadruple straight lines, palm shape, double circles, rosette). New tools are found: a rosette of bigger dimension, a V-form, and wavy lines put near to each other in order to form an interlaced band. To the inner case is attached a leather carrying strap, fixed at the bottom with a leather knot. The strap is decorated with single straight lines. The outer envelope is of dark brown leather decorated with motifs that reproduce the latin cross and the floral pattern found on the book cover. The same tools have been used (quadruple straight lines, palm shape, double circles, criss-cross, X-shape, rosettes and corniform motifs). Above the outer evelope is fixed a knot of rolled leather. A strip of light brown leather is looped around the lower border of the outer leather case. On the surface, three additional leater straps are decorated with inserts of white, light brown, red leather that form 5 crosses. To these straps are attached long leather fringes, today partly lost. The one in better condition is formed by four leather fringes 400 mm long.Binding material
