She is represented as the queen of Wallo↗ in the 1860s, a status which does not reflect the reality of her power at that time. Following the death of her husband Liban ʾAmade Liban in 1857, in the course of revolt against Tewodros II , she acted as a regent for her young son ʾAmade Liban . She continued to fight Tewodros II and captured Maqdalā↗ and sided with the Napier expedition against Tewodros II . Mastāwat was described as a fierce warrior and a charismatic leader. Mastāwāt did not convert to Christianity, unlike her son ʾAmade Liban who was obliged to do so at Boru Medā↗ , receiving the name Ḫāyla Māryām. But she remained loyal to Mǝnilǝk II even after the death of her son ʾAmade Liban .
