Palaeography
Hand 1
Script: Ethiopic
Mediocre and irregularIn many words, the 3rd order of a letter is written instead of the 5th; s., e.g., on check the viewer53ra : እግዚአብሒር for እግዚአብሔር (ls.6-7) ኀቢየ for ኀቤየ (l.12) በጊዚሃ for በጊዜሃ (l.18) ይቢሎ for ይቤሎ (l.19); on check the viewer57r , the words: ይቢሉ for ይቤሉ (check the viewer57ra l.4) ላዕሊክሙ for ላዕሌክሙ (check the viewer57rc l.16).The handwriting is characterized by rounded and right-sloping letters. The quality often changes throughout the Ms. (s., e.g., on check the viewer102r , column a and columns bc). Some distinctive features: - ብ and ኵ have the 6th order marker very close to the top of the letter (e.g., check the viewer53ra l.7, l.13, 108ra l.2); - the upper horizontal strokes of the letters መ and ወ are slightly slanted to the left; - ፪ has the bottom loop open (e.g, check the viewer51va ); - ፮ has sometimes the loop open, looking like “compressed” ፯ (s. the sixth hour of the days: e.g., check the viewer26rb , 51vb) - usually, the numerals are written with double dashes above and below (s., e.g., check the viewer27rb , 30rc); - in many words, the 3rd order is written instead of the 5th (?).
Ink: Black (in many fols. faded); red (brilliant vermillion).
Rubrication: Holy names (As Holy name, the name of Jesus is in this Ms. the name mostly rubricated. In the other Mss. with the same text, it is usually the name of Mary); a few lines alternating with black lines in the incipit page of Text I-1; headings and incipits of the texts, their sections and subsections; titles of the Biblical books and other works; names of Hebrew letters in Text I-8; directives for the ministers in Texts I-3, I-7 and I-8; the words ṣallǝyu in Text I-7 and nāstabaqʷǝʿ in Text I-8; some interlineal corrections (e.g., fol. 78rc); elements of the punctuation signs, of Ethiopic numerals and of the text dividers. The indications of the day and night hours are usually not rubricated.
